Elder flowers, leaves and berries are used therapeutically for soothing coughs and inflammation by increasing bronchial secretions. It also noticeably increases sweating.
Elder flowers are ideal for the treatment of colds and influenza and as an expectorant for treatment of mild inflammation of the upper respiratory tract e.g. hay fever.
Elder is taken for symptomatic relief in all sorts of upper respiratory ailments. As an herbal compress, it is also used for swelling and inflammation, as a diaphoretic for treatment of fever and chills and as a diuretic.
A tea can be made by boiling 2g of the dried flowers in 1 cup of water for 10 – 15 minutes. Drink hot 3 times a day. For colds or fevers, combine Elder Flowers with Peppermint or Yarrow.
