Liquorice contains a constituent called glycyrrhizin, which may cause raised blood pressure and water retention in some people. Only common if more than 10gms of root, which equates to around 1gm of glycyrrhizin, is taken for an extended period of time.
Combine 2 – 4g of the root in a cup of water, bring to the boil then simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Take 3 times a day after meals.
