The raspberry bush is native to North America, and is also cultivated in Canada. Raspberry leaves have been used in pregnancy to strengthen and tone the tissue of the womb, therefore assisting contractions.
Raspberry leaf tea can be useful for ailments that cause intestinal inflammation and discomfort, such as diarrhoea. The tannins reduce swelling by constricting minute blood vessels called capillaries; this prevents oozing or leaking of fluids in the intestines.
The herb’s astringent quality has inspired other uses as well such as using the raspberry leaf tea as a mouthwash and gargle to soothe canker sores and sore throats.
Raspberry may cause slight loosening of stools and nausea.
Combine 1 cup of boiling water with 2g of the dried herb, infuse for 10 – 15 minutes. Take as needed, however 2 – 3 cups are commonly taken during pregnancy.
