To assist infants with regurgitation problems, Karicare Food Thickener can be used safely and effectively for thickening infant feeds. Thickened feeds may reduce regurgitation.
For breast fed infants: Karicare Food Thickener can be mixed with a small amount of cool, boiled water or expressed breast milk and fed as a gel before, during or directly after the breast feed. Alternatively it can be mixed with expressed breast milk to thicken the feed.
For bottle fed infants: Karicare Food Thickener can be used to thicken standard infant formulas, or special fromulas. If a baby on standard formula requires a thickened feed, Karicare AR formula, which already contains thickener, is recommended. Karicare Food Thickener is not recommended for premature infants. For infants on special formulas, check with your health care professional before using Karicare Food Thickener.

Directions for Mixing:
Preparing Thickened Bottle Feeds:
Use expressed breast milk, or prepare infant formula as directed. Add to the bottle 2 scoops (8g) of Karicare Food Thickener for each 200mL of breast milk or formula. Whisk or shake vigorously. If baby continues to regurgitate, gradually increase to 3 or 4 scoops for each 200mL. A medium-fast flow teat is recommended unless otherwise advised.
Preparing a Gel:
Sprinkle 1 scoop of Karicare Food Thickener into 20-30mL (approx 1-2 tablespoons) of cooled, boiled water, expressed breast milk, or infant formula. Whisk or mix vigorously to a thin paste. Feed from a spoon, cup or plastic syringe, before, during or directly after the breast or bottle feed. Increase up to 2 scoops if a thicker gel is needed.
Note: All formula feeds should be prepared immediately before feeding baby. Do not prepare gels or thickened feeds in advance as thickness will increase on standing. Discard unfinished feeds.
For children and adults:
To assist children and adults with swallowing problems, Karicare Food Thickener can be used to thicken hot or cold drinks, soups, sauces, purees and custards. Karicare Food Thickener is tasteless and odourless. Start with 2 scoops for each 100mL then add further scoops to increase thickness if required.
Note: If thickened fluids are refrigerated they may become thicker over time.
